2. Flyers
If you have a computer and a printer and somewhere to hang or hand out a flyer (i.e. your office at work, a community bulletin board, your church, a club or group, etc.) you can help me to help Janet. There are two parts to this flyer, the information sheet that you can print and hand out and the tear away tabs that can be added to the flyer for bulletin boards so that readers can take one with them to remember the website url when they go back to their computer.

On August 24, 2009, 22 year old Janet was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a form of blood cancer. Janet is currently living in the Bay Area and is undergoing chemotherapy in the hopes that she can attain a successful remission. If the chemo fails she will need a stem cell transplant. She will then be faced with the daunting task of locating a marrow match from the national or international registries after tests revealed that her only sibling is not a match. Processing new donor samples can takeup to 2 months or more so it is crucial for people to be tested asap before her need becomes critical.
Already in the registry? No matter how long ago you signed up you will remain in the National Registry until you turn 61 years old. If you move or change your phone number you can update your contact information by CLICKING HERE. Last year more then 4,400 people missed their opportunity to save a life when Be The Match was unable to locate them after they were a preliminary match for a patient in need.

I just wanted to say that I have been reading your blog for a while but have never commented...I wanted to thank you for raising awareness for the marrow registry. I work at a cancer hospital researching lymphoma and get to witness the sometimes unfathomable recovery of patients receiving a bone marrow transplant. Because I work here, I donate platelets every two weeks (today is a donation day!) and because of my donor status, the clinic helped me get registered in the NMDP. Not everyone has an opportunity like that; the information you have given to the blogosphere is invaluable!! I'll be thinking of Janet while the ol' pheresis machine is sucking out my platelets hoping that she gets well soon, and if she needs a match, she finds one. Thank you again for the awareness that you've brought to your blog :)
Al thank you so much for your kind words. In all honesty sometimes I wonder if I'm just spinning my wheels or if I'm making a difference. Every now and then I receive a message like yours and it inspires me to keep trying harder to spread the word about the donor program and patients like Janet.
That is wonderful that you donate your platelets on a regular basis. When my cousin was sick she was receiving platelet transfusions almost every other day for the first month after her diagnosis. Thank goodness there are people like yourself who give so generously.
