I must admit I hadn't ever even noticed the Pickwick Hotel at 5th and Mission even though I've parked at the 5th and Mission garage dozens of times over the years.
Recently, not only did I notice it, I enjoyed a four night stay. Why? Because it's within walking distance from Moscone West where Macworld is held. My stay was a very nice perk provided by my boss for working all three days of Macworld and going up a day early and staying a day late for setup and pick up of the booth inventory and gear.
My Classic Deluxe Room was very comfortable. In room wifi was included which is a very nice touch considering a lot of hotels charge extra for it and only offer it complimentary in their lobbies.
If I'm ever staying up in the city to attend another event at the Moscone Convention Center the Pickwick would be my first choice.
The bathroom was small but roomy enough for one. It's an older hotel so it's not surprising to see some wear. This was the only room to show it with a tub that had small blisters across its surface.
It was also the scene of a rather embarrassing faux pas. When I tried to take a shower I couldn't get the water to turn on. I turned, pushed, and pulled on the shower handle. Then I tried to call the front desk to report my shower as broken only to discover my in-room phone didn't work. So I looked the hotel up on Google and used my cell to call the front desk. They said they would send someone up to fix the phone but that the shower was "European" style and I had to pull it by the handle away from the wall. I said I tried that and the nice lady advised me to pull harder. OK, I just have to say, I've been to Europe once and don't recall my shower there being as big of a challenge as the shower was in San Francisco.

Feeling clean, and definitely more cultured, I would head out each morning to walk down Mission Street to Moscone West for another day of working in the Insanely Great Products booth at Macworld.
And nicest of all, and for the first time ever, housekeeping left me thank you notes for leaving them a small gratuity for cleaning my room each day. I didn't expect any acknowledgement which is why it made it a nice surprise. It was very classy of them imo.
Another surprise was the morning Richard and I stepped out of the hotel, walked a few doors down to grab breakfast and saw this! A construction crane that seemed to be around two blocks long.
WOW. It was used to lift a container as large as a railroad car onto a nearby roof.
The container was HUGE but looks small in these pictures because it was so far away.
Richard surmised it was an air conditioning unit. It looked like it was being placed on the roof of the Westfield San Francisco Centre shopping mall.
We weren't the only ones intrigued by the sight. Other people were stopping and taking pictures too. It was definitely something you don't see every day.
Normally 5th Street isn't closed but this is what the Pickwick looks like as you leave the 5th and Mission parking garage at the corner of 5th and Mission. Look up the next time you park there and you'll see it.
